General Mixing & Application Tips

Use “parts” as any consistent measure such as drops, brush-loads, or palette dabs.

Always mix thoroughly before applying.

Blue and black pigments are extremely strong. Add them sparingly.

If a colour appears too strong, add more white to soften the tone.

Use yellow to increase warmth and blue to cool the tone.

Build colour gradually using thin layers rather than strong opaque colour.

Swatch Testing Guidance

Always test each colour mix on a palette or sample surface before applying to the doll.

Compare the tone with real newborn reference images to ensure realism.

Build colour slowly using thin translucent layers rather than heavy paint.

Undertone Mixing Guide for Reborn Artists

Understanding undertones helps artists create lifelike skin tones with depth and realism.

Warm Undertones

Add a very small amount of yellow or warm red to the base skin tone.

This produces peach or golden warmth often seen in newborn skin.

Cool Undertones

Add a tiny amount of blue or violet to create translucent cooler skin tones.

This is often used for premature or very young newborn effects.

Neutral Undertones

Balance red and yellow in equal amounts.

Neutralise with a tiny touch of blue if the colour becomes too warm.

Golden Undertones

Gradually increase yellow within the base skin mix until a soft golden warmth appears.

Undertone Tips

Undertones should always be very subtle.

If the colour is clearly visible, it is usually too strong.

Always test undertones on a sample before applying to the doll.

Natural Blushing Placement Guide

Natural blushing adds life and realism to reborn dolls.

These areas mimic natural warmth and circulation found in real babies.
