Rooting is one of the most delicate and rewarding parts of reborn doll artistry. The right needle can make all the difference between frustration and flawless results. At Mott & Gido, we’re proud to offer Lauren Pearce Rooting Needles — precision-crafted tools designed to help you achieve beautiful, natural hair rooting every time.
In this post, we’ll explore the different types of rooting needles, clear up common misconceptions, and guide you to the best choice for your project.
Why Needle Choice Matters
Rooting needles are not all created equal. The gauge (thickness), tip design, and barb arrangement affect how the needle grips hair, how it feels in your hand, and how easy it is to achieve realistic results. Choosing the right needle for your materials (vinyl or silicone) and desired look (micro or mono rooting, fine or ultra-fine hair) is essential.

Crown Needles: Precision and Durability
What are Crown Rooting Needles for reborn dolls?
Crown Rooting Needles are precision tools designed for micro and mono rooting in reborn doll making. They feature a special barb arrangement that grips one hair at a time, offering control and durability. Available in 42g and 46g gauges, they are ideal for creating realistic hair effects.
Our preferred rooting needles are the Lauren Pearce Crown Needles, made with German precision engineering. These needles are known for their strength — they typically bend rather than break, and can often be gently straightened if needed, which means less disruption during your work.
What Does “Crown” Mean?
The term “Crown” refers to the shape and arrangement of the barbs at the needle tip. These barbs are designed to grip and insert hair one at a time with precision and control. Despite the name, Crown needles are suitable for rooting the entire head, not just the crown area.
We stock two gauges to suit different needs:
42g Fine Crown Needles: Excellent all-rounders for detailed rooting work, offering a balance between strength and delicacy.
46g Extra Fine Crown Needles: Ideal for silicone dolls and ultra-fine rooting, where maximum precision and a gentle touch are required.
Clearing Up the “Compact” Needle Confusion
If you’ve been active in the reborn community, you may have come across the term “compact needles.” It’s important to understand that “compact” is not an official industry term or a recognized needle gauge. Many manufacturers don’t even recognise the term.
What artists usually mean by “compact” needles is a needle with a triangular-style tip and closely spaced barbs. This design can offer a more compact grip on the hair and is often preferred for ultra micro rooting. However, the terminology was popularised within the community and by some sellers, rather than by manufacturers.
We’ve spoken directly with our German manufacturer, and they now understand the specific tip style artists are referring to. While we’re happy to stock needles matching this description, it’s important to know they may be listed under different technical names.
Fork Needles: For the Experienced Artist
Fork needles have a distinct tip with a groove or fork shape. While they can be effective for micro rooting, they come with a steeper learning curve and aren’t as widely recommended for consistent results. They were popular in the past and demonstrated at trade shows but are now generally considered more suitable for expert rooters.
Which Needle Is Right for You?
Choosing the perfect needle depends on your materials and desired effect:
Vinyl dolls: 42g Crown needles are a reliable choice for most artists.
Silicone dolls: 46g Extra Fine Crown needles offer the delicate touch needed for ultra-fine rooting.
Micro vs. Mono rooting: Crown needles are excellent for both, thanks to their precise barb arrangement.
If you’re unsure which needle will best suit your project, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to guide you to the perfect tool to bring your reborn artistry to life.
